BMW M2 (G87) – Model Year 2025

Country of Manufacture
All BMW M2 units are assembled at BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, on the same line as the 2 Series Coupé from which it is derived.
Brief Description
For MY25, the compact M receives a light software update, new black “Arrow” DRL headlights, and color-matched fender flares. The exposed carbon fiber roof (optional) and quad central exhausts remain. The interior gains the Curved Display (12.3″ instruments + 14.9″ infotainment) with BMW Operating System 9, a two-spoke M steering wheel, and lightweight M Carbon seats (–9 kg). Chassis torsional rigidity has been increased by 5% thanks to new front bracing; track width (1,617/1,605 mm) and wheelbase (2,741 mm) remain unchanged.

CONS
Reported drawbacks
CON | Detail |
---|
Not a “pocket-M” in weight | 1,730 kg DIN (AT) makes the M2 heavier than the older F87 CS. |
Stiff ride | Suspension tuned for track use; bumps felt even in Comfort mode. |
Rearward visibility | Sloped rear window makes parking difficult without the rear camera. |
S58 oil consumption | Around 0.7 L every 3,000 km during spirited or track driving. |
No mild-hybrid / PHEV | Full luxury tax in Italy; no electric assist for city ZTLs. |
Cabin noise | 275/35-19 front and 285/30-20 rear tires generate wind roar over 130 km/h. |
Estimated Running Costs (Italy)

Known Issues & Fixes (forums & track-day reports)
Issue | Suggested Fix |
---|
Chassis stress cracks under track load | Check strut bar torque; install OEM “M Performance” steel reinforcement kit. |
Brake overheating on long circuits | Upgrade to drilled “M Compound” discs + DOT 4 Racing fluid. |
OS 9 lag after OTA | Hard reset (30 s volume button) + patch 25-09-10; replace head unit if needed. |
Creaky M Carbon seats | Apply felt kit 52 25 96 and lubricate rails with PTFE spray. |
Front tire shoulder wear | Increase camber to –2°00′; cross-rotate tires every 4,000 km. |
Summary
The 2025 BMW M2 is the most compact of the “true” M cars, maintaining the raw essence of a rear-wheel drive sports coupe with an optional manual transmission—now enhanced with the OS 9 cockpit and a 480 hp S58 engine. Comfort is a secondary concern, and running costs are in line with high-performance cars, but for enthusiasts seeking a purist coupe ready for twisty roads or track work, the new M2 remains a standout benchmark in its class.
Verdict — BMW M2 Coupé (G87 – Model Year 2025)
The second-generation baby-M keeps the “rear-wheel drive + inline-six + manual gearbox” formula but receives a series of precise refinements for MY 2025: power rises to 480 hp (+20), retuned active M differential, iDrive 9 with 10.7″/12.3″ Curved Display, new Alcantara M steering wheel with redesigned M buttons, and fresh colors like Vitamin Orange and Frozen Portimao Blue. The M Adaptive dampers gain softer low-speed valves in Comfort mode, while the M Servotronic steering now features a fixed 14.6:1 ratio for improved linearity. Direct rivals: Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, Toyota GR Supra 3.0 6-MT, Alpine A110 R, Audi RS 3 sedan.
Category | Where it excels | Where it matches | Where it trails |
---|
Design & image | “Square-shouldered” muscles, 3-D intakes, +55 mm wider fenders; Frozen M paints and Carbon Pack including CFRP roof. | Rear quad 100 mm central exhausts. | Less “show-car” cabin than Porsche’s dual OLED “Heritage” interior. |
Dynamics | S58 3.0 biturbo: 0–100 km/h in 4.0 s (manual) / 3.8 s (M Steptronic), active M diff, Michelin Cup 2 Connect 275/35-19 front / 285/30-20 rear; –8% roll vs MY23. | M Compound brakes 380/370 mm perform well in track use. | Curb weight 1,710 kg (DIN) > Cayman GTS (1,405 kg) → less agile in tight direction changes. |
Real efficiency | 9.2 L/100 km constant highway (M Steptronic). Start-stop and 48V sailing deactivated in Track mode. |
| Manual hits 10 L/100 km in city; Cayman 4.0 averages 8.5 L. |
Connectivity / HMI | iDrive 9 (<3 s boot), QuickSelect, wireless CarPlay/Android, built-in M Drift Analyser and M Laptimer. | M Drive Professional app with cloud datalogging. | Porsche PCM 7.0 more intuitive with physical knobs; Alpine cockpit more analog and “pure.” |
Comfort & NVH | Optional M Carbon Bucket seats (–10.8 kg), 71 dB @130 km/h (acoustic glass). | Adaptive suspension smooths highway cruising in Comfort mode. | Cup 2 Connect noisy on wet tarmac; Supra has softer run-flats. |
Practicality | 390 L boot (more than RS 3 sedan), rear ISOFIX, ski/snowboard passthrough. | Wireless charging, two USB-C ports. | Tight rear space for >1.75 m passengers; Cayman has front + rear trunk (280 L total). |
Running costs | Service Inclusive 5 years / 60,000 km €760. | Cup 2 tires (19/20″): €380 front • €410 rear. | Oil consumption 0.6 L every 4,000 km under track use. |
Depreciation | Estimated 70% after 36 months (enthusiast niche). |
| Manual 6-MT slightly rarer → 72% but smaller market. |
ADAS & safety | L2: ACC 160 km/h, Lane Keep, Eye-Steering lane change; 360° camera with recording. |
| No Level 3 (irrelevant in this category, but absent vs Mercedes Drive Pilot). |
Best suited for:
Analog purists: 6-speed manual, RWD, mechanical diff, 4-stage stability control.
Track-dayers: M Compound brakes, Track mode, integrated telemetry, Cup 2 Connect stock.
Sporty daily drivers: M Steptronic with adaptive cruise, heated seats, 9.2 L/100 km highway.
Who should look elsewhere
Lightweight fans → Alpine A110 R (1,090 kg) or Cayman GT4 RS.
Naturally aspirated lovers → Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0.
More comfortable 2+2 coupés → Audi RS 5 or Lexus RC F.
Recommended configuration
