Il Citral è un componente chimico che si trova in agrumi, frutta e verdura. In particolare si trova nella citronella dove è il componente principale con circa il 68,78%. Ha dimostrato protezione contro lo stress ossidativo indotto e potrebbe essere un agente promettente per la chemioprevenzione del cancro del polmone (1).
Stabile e sicuro per la pelle (2), il Citral si è rivelato un ottimo antibatterico per l'uso nel trattamento delle infezioni resistenti ai farmaci (3).
Citral ha mostrato un forte effetto citotossico e attività antinfiammatoria in una linea cellulare RAW 264.7 (4).
Citral potrebbe rivestire il ruolo di fitomolecola capofila da sviluppare ulteriormente come agente anti-stafilococco (5).
