Euphorbia Cerifera Wax Extract: properties, uses, pros, cons, safety

Euphorbia Cerifera Wax Extract is a naturally derived product obtained from the plant Euphorbia Cerifera also known scientifically as Euphorbia antisyphilitica. It is a plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family and grows in Texas and New Mexico.

Euphorbia Cerifera Wax Extract is derived from the candelilla plant. This extract is a more refined and concentrated form of Euphorbia Cerifera Wax, retaining many of the wax's beneficial properties but in a form that might be more suitable for certain types of cosmetic formulations where less of the raw wax's bulk is desired but its beneficial properties are needed.

Industrial Production Process

  • Collection of raw wax. The process begins with Euphorbia Cerifera Wax that has already been extracted as described in previous steps.
  • Heating. The raw wax is heated to liquefy it, facilitating the separation of different components.
  • Solvent extraction. Specific solvents (such as ethanol or hexane) are added to extract active components from the melted wax. This process targets substances like esters and fatty alcohols present in the wax.
  • Solvent evaporation. The solvent is evaporated under vacuum at controlled temperatures to recover the extracts without degrading their properties.
  • Filtration and purification. The extract is filtered to remove any solid impurities and further purified to ensure uniformity and quality.
  • Concentration. The purified extract can be further concentrated to increase the percentage of active ingredients.
  • Quality control. Each batch of Euphorbia Cerifera Wax Extract undergoes rigorous quality checks, testing its chemical composition and physical properties to ensure it meets the required standards for end-use.

Cosmetics - INCI Functions

Binder agent. Ingredient that is used in cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical products as an anti-caking agent with the function of making the product in which it is incorporated silky, compact and homogenous. The binder, either natural such as mucilage, gums and starches or chemical, may be in the form of a powder or liquid.

Film-forming agent. It produces, upon application, a very thin continuous film with an optimal balance of cohesion, adhesion and stickiness on skin, hair or nails to counteract or limit damage from external phenomena such as chemicals, UV rays and pollution.

Main uses and benefits of Euphorbia cerifera wax extract.

  • Emollient and Protective. It provides an excellent protective barrier that helps maintain skin moisture, making it ideal for lip balms, moisturizing creams, and other skincare products.
  • Formulation Stabilization. It helps stabilize cosmetic formulations, improving the texture and longevity of cosmetic products.
  • Smooth and Glossy Effect. When applied to skin and hair, candelilla wax extract leaves a smooth sensation and can provide a glossy effect without weighing down.
  • Compatibility with Vegan Products. Being a vegetable alternative to beeswax, it is suitable for vegan products and meets the growing demand for sustainable cosmetic alternatives.
  • Biodegradability. The extract is biodegradable, contributing to the sustainability of the products that contain it and minimizing environmental impact.
  • Use in Candles and Other Industrial Products. Not limited to cosmetics, this extract is also used in the production of candles and industrial products, where film-forming properties and stability are required.
