Lonicera caprifolium extract is a compound obtained from the shrub of the same name (Honeysuckle) belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family.
The name defines the structure of the ingredient
- "Lonicera Caprifolium" is the scientific name for the Italian Honeysuckle. The first part of the name, "Lonicera," is the genus, and "Caprifolium" is the species.
- extract indicates that the ingredient is obtained by extracting certain components from the plant Lonicera Caprifolium.
Description of raw materials used in production
The raw material for Lonicera caprifolium extract are mixed parts of the plant itself.
Extraction process
- Preparation - The plant parts are prepared for extraction, which may include cleaning and removing any impurities.
- Extraction - The plant parts are then immersed in a solvent (water, alcohol, etc.) that pulls out the chemical compounds in the plant. This creates a solution containing the plant's chemical compounds.
- Purification - The solution is then purified, which may include removing the solvent and any remaining impurities.
- Drying - The purified extract is then dried and prepared for packaging and shipping.
What it is used for and where
Cosmetics
Cosmetic astringent. This ingredient exerts a direct effect on the skin by tightening dilated pores by contracting stratum corneum cells and removing superfluous oil.
Fragrance. It plays a very important role in the formulation of cosmetic products as it allows perfume to be enhanced, masked or added to the final product, improving its commercial viability. The consumer always expects to find a pleasant scent in a cosmetic product.

Abstract. This work aimed to investigate the chemical composition, antioxidant activity, antinociceptive effect, and wound healing activity of the Lonicera caprifolium L. flower essential oil (LCEO). Linalool (16.42%), d-limonene (9.99%), and α-cadinol (10.65%) were the most prevalent components of the LCEO. The LCEO revealed moderate DPPH and ABTS radical-scavenging activity. LCEO exhibited potent antinociceptive activity in acetic acid-induced writhing and hot plate-induced pain model; LCEO reduced 73.88 ± 2.78% of writhing and significantly increased pain withdrawal latency in the mice, respectively. The LCEO also presented a potent wound healing effect, with 98.08 ± 1.37% wound closure on the 12th day of treatment. The results of the study demonstrate antioxidant and wound healing potential with antinociceptive effect. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the bioactivities of L. caprifolium L. essential oil.
