Cape Verde

Cape Verde, also known as Cabo Verde, is an archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa. It consists of 10 main islands and several smaller ones, divided into Barlavento (windward) and Sotavento (leeward) islands. The capital of Cape Verde is Praia, located on the island of Santiago. Historically, Cape Verde was discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century. The archipelago became an important commercial center during the transatlantic slave trade. Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and has since maintained one of the most stable and developed democracies in Africa. Cape Verde's economy is heavily influenced by tourism, services, and remittances from emigrants. Despite the scarcity of natural resources, the country has made significant strides in economic and social development, becoming one of the African countries with the highest human development index. The population of Cape Verde is a mix of African and Portuguese, which is reflected in its rich Creole culture. The official language is Portuguese, but Cape Verdean Creole, based on Portuguese, is commonly spoken. Music is a fundamental aspect of Cape Verdean culture, with genres like Morna, internationally famous thanks to singer Cesária Évora. Culturally, Cape Verde is known for its music, dance, literature, and cuisine, blending African and Portuguese influences. The country hosts several cultural festivals celebrating its unique heritage. Geographically, the islands of Cape Verde vary from volcanic landscapes to sandy beaches and fertile valleys. This geographical diversity offers a variety of experiences to visitors, from hiking on volcanoes to beach holidays.
