Natural Bourbon vanilla flavor

Natural Bourbon vanilla flavor is a flavouring ingredient obtained from natural components of vanilla (Vanilla planifolia, family Orchidaceae), used to provide foods with the characteristic sweet, warm and aromatic profile of vanilla.

The term “Bourbon” traditionally refers to Vanilla planifolia grown mainly in the Indian Ocean region, particularly Madagascar, Réunion and the Comoros. It is unrelated to bourbon whiskey.

The main characteristic aromatic compound is vanillin, but natural vanilla contains numerous other volatile substances that create a more complex flavour profile than vanillin alone.

These may include vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, anisaldehyde and numerous phenolic and aromatic compounds in varying amounts.

The flavor may be produced through extraction of vanilla beans, followed by concentration or formulation.

It may be supplied in liquid or powdered form. Commercial preparations may contain carriers such as alcohol, water, glycols, maltodextrin or other technological ingredients, depending on the formulation.

From a nutritional point of view, it is used in very small amounts and its role is essentially flavouring rather than nutritional.

It should not be considered equivalent to whole vanilla beans or pure vanilla extract, as concentration and composition may vary between products.

Calories

There is no single standard caloric value for natural Bourbon vanilla flavor because it depends on concentration and the carriers used.

At normal food-use levels, its caloric contribution to the finished product is generally negligible.

Powdered preparations containing maltodextrin or other carbohydrates may have a high energy value per 100 g, although they are normally used in very small amounts.

Uses in Food

It is widely used in ice cream, yoghurt, custards, chocolate, biscuits, cakes, baked goods, desserts and dairy preparations.

It is also used in beverages, breakfast cereals, spreads, bars and plant-based products.

Bourbon vanilla is appreciated for its generally smooth, sweet, creamy and slightly floral aromatic profile.

It provides a consistent vanilla flavour while requiring much smaller quantities than whole vanilla beans.

It may be combined with cocoa, chocolate, coffee, fruit and spices to increase the aromatic complexity of foods.

Uses in Cosmetics

Vanilla, vanilla extracts and related aromatic compounds may be used in cosmetics mainly for their fragrancing properties.

They may be found in creams, balms, body products, soaps, shampoos, bath products and perfumes.

Botanical vanilla extracts may also provide small amounts of phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity, although their main function is generally aromatic.

Concentrated fragrance compounds may cause sensitisation or irritation in particularly sensitive individuals.

Food-grade natural Bourbon vanilla flavor should not automatically be considered equivalent to a standardised cosmetic ingredient.

Allergens

Vanilla is not among the major food allergens requiring mandatory declaration in the European Union.

Rare individual reactions may nevertheless occur. Any allergens introduced through carriers or other formulation ingredients should be assessed for the specific product.

Assessment

A natural flavouring ingredient particularly valued for the complex and characteristic profile of Bourbon vanilla, effective even at very low use levels.

Ingredient verdict: a useful natural flavouring for providing a rich and characteristic vanilla note, with generally negligible nutritional impact.

Cons: possible rare sensitivities; composition may vary depending on the carriers used
