Houttuynia Cordata Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract is derived from the Houttuynia cordata plant, including its flowers, leaves, and stems. This extract is valued for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. It is used in cosmetics to enhance skin appearance and provide beneficial effects at the dermal level.

Chemical Composition and Structure:

Houttuynia Cordata Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract contains:

Flavonoids: Compounds such as quercetin and rutin, known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Saponins: Compounds with anti-inflammatory and protective effects on the skin.

Phenolic Acids: Compounds like caffeic acid and ferulic acid that offer protection against cellular damage.

Essential Oils: Preserve the aromatic and therapeutic properties of the plant.

Physical Properties:

Houttuynia Cordata Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract appears as a liquid or powder, depending on the extraction process used. It is soluble in water and can be easily incorporated into cosmetic formulations.

Production Process:

Harvesting and Preparation:
Flowers, leaves, and stems of Houttuynia cordata are harvested and prepared for extraction.
Extraction:
The plant is treated with solvents or other techniques to extract active ingredients.
Filtration:
The extract is filtered to obtain a pure and concentrated form.
Incorporation:
Houttuynia Cordata Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract is ready for use in cosmetic formulations.

Applications:

Antioxidant: Protects the skin from free radical damage.
Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammation and soothes the skin.
Regenerating: Promotes cellular regeneration and improves skin elasticity.

Environmental and Safety Considerations:

Houttuynia Cordata Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract is generally regarded as safe for topical use. As with all extracts, it should be used according to established guidelines to avoid potential allergic reactions or skin irritations. It is important to ensure that the extract is obtained and processed sustainably and free from harmful chemicals.

INCI Functions:

Antioxidant agent. Ingredient that counteracts oxidative stress and prevents cell damage. Free radicals, pathological inflammatory processes, reactive nitrogen species and reactive oxygen species are responsible for the ageing process and many diseases caused by oxidation.

Cosmetic astringent. This ingredient exerts a direct effect on the skin by tightening dilated pores by contracting stratum corneum cells and removing superfluous oil.

Skin conditioning agent - Emollient. Emollients have the characteristic of enhancing the skin barrier through a source of exogenous lipids that adhere to the skin, improving barrier properties by filling gaps in intercorneocyte clusters to improve hydration while protecting against inflammation. In practice, they have the ability to create a barrier that prevents transepidermal water loss. Emollients are described as degreasing or refreshing additives that improve the lipid content of the upper layers of the skin by preventing degreasing and drying of the skin. The problem with emollients is that many have a strong lipophilic character and are identified as occlusive ingredients; they are oily and fatty materials that remain on the skin surface and reduce transepidermal water loss. In cosmetics, emollients and moisturisers are often considered synonymous with humectants and occlusives.

Skin conditioning agent - Humectant. Humectants are hygroscopic substances used to minimise water loss in the skin and to prevent it from drying out by facilitating faster and greater absorption of water into the stratum corneum of the epidermis. The epidermis is the most superficial of the three layers that make up the human skin (epidermis, dermis and hypodermis) and is the layer that maintains hydration in all three layers. In turn, the epidermis is composed of five layers: corneum, the most superficial, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum and basale. Humectants have the ability to retain in the stratum corneum the water they attract from the air and have the function of moisturising the skin. It is better to use them before emollients that are oil-based.

Skin conditioning agent - Miscellaneous. This ingredient has the task of modifying and improving the condition of the skin when it is damaged or dry, reducing flaking and restoring its elasticity.
