Rosa rugosa stem extract is derived from the stems of the Rosa rugosa plant, also known as the rugosa rose or wrinkled rose. This plant is native to East Asia and is valued for its ornamental beauty, fragrant flowers, and potential health benefits. The stem extract is used in various applications due to its unique chemical composition.

Chemical Composition and Structure:

Flavonoids: Includes compounds like quercetin and kaempferol, known for their antioxidant properties.
Phenolic Compounds: Such as ellagic acid and gallic acid, which contribute to the extract’s antioxidant activity.
Essential Oils: Contains trace amounts of essential oil components that may include citronellol and geraniol, contributing to its scent and potential antimicrobial properties.
Vitamins and Minerals: May contain vitamins such as vitamin C and various minerals that benefit skin health.

Physical Properties:

Appearance: Typically a concentrated, liquid extract that may have a light to dark brown color, depending on the extraction method and concentration.
Odor: The extract may have a mild, earthy or floral scent, which can vary based on the processing method.
Texture: Generally has a viscous consistency, which can be slightly sticky or smooth depending on its formulation.

Production Process:

Cultivation: Rosa rugosa is cultivated in well-drained soils with ample sunlight. The stems are typically harvested when the plant is in optimal condition to ensure high-quality extract.
Harvesting: Stems are collected during the growing season, ensuring they are free from disease and pests.
Extraction: The harvested stems are processed using methods such as steam distillation, solvent extraction, or cold pressing to obtain the extract. The choice of method depends on the desired concentration and specific application.
Refinement: The extract may be filtered or further processed to achieve the desired purity and concentration.

Applications:

Cosmetics: Used in skincare products for its potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be found in creams, serums, and lotions aimed at improving skin health and appearance.
Personal Care Products: Incorporated into shampoos, conditioners, and body washes for its soothing and beneficial effects on the skin and hair.
Herbal Remedies: Utilized in traditional medicine for its purported health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Environmental and Safety Considerations:

Environmental Impact: Rosa rugosa is generally sustainable to grow; however, it is important to manage cultivation practices to prevent overharvesting and ensure ecological balance.
Safety: The extract is considered safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products. However, as with all botanical ingredients, individual reactions such as intolerance or allergies cannot be ruled out.

INCI:

Humectant. Hygroscopic compound used to minimise water loss in the skin and to prevent it from drying out by facilitating faster and greater absorption of water into the stratum corneum of the epidermis. The epidermis is the most superficial of the three layers that make up human skin (epidermis, dermis and hypodermis) and is the layer that maintains hydration in all three layers. In turn, the epidermis is composed of five layers: horny, the most superficial, granular, spinous, shiny, and basal. Humectants have the ability to retain the water they attract from the air in the stratum corneum and have the function of moisturising the skin. They are best used before emollients, which are oil-based.

Skin conditioning agent. It is the mainstay of topical skin treatment as it has the function of restoring, increasing or improving skin tolerance to external factors, including melanocyte tolerance. The most important function of the conditioning agent is to prevent skin dehydration, but the subject is rather complex and involves emollients and humectants that can be added in the formulation.

Skin protectant. It creates a protective barrier on the skin to defend it from harmful substances, irritants, allergens, pathogens that can cause various inflammatory conditions. These products can also improve the natural skin barrier and in most cases more than one is needed to achieve an effective result.
