Jasminum Officinale Oil is an essential oil obtained from the flowers of the Jasminum officinale plant, commonly known as jasmine, belonging to the Oleaceae family. This oil is valued for its aromatic and therapeutic properties, making it popular in various applications, particularly in the fields of cosmetics, personal care, and aromatherapy.

Chemical Composition and Structure

The chemical composition of Jasminum Officinale Oil includes a variety of bioactive compounds such as terpenes, esters, alcohols, and other aromatic compounds. These compounds vary in structure: terpenes are hydrocarbons with cyclic structures, esters are formed from the reaction of acids and alcohols, and the aromatic compounds provide the characteristic fragrance of jasmine.

Physical Properties

Jasminum Officinale Oil typically appears as a pale yellow to amber liquid with a characteristic and intense floral fragrance. It has a smooth, oily texture and is insoluble in water but soluble in oils and organic solvents.

Production Process

The production of Jasminum Officinale Oil involves several steps:

Harvesting and Selection: the flowers of the Jasminum officinale plant are harvested and selected for quality
Cleaning: the harvested flowers are thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt and contaminants
Extraction: the cleaned flowers are subjected to an extraction process, typically using steam distillation or solvent extraction, to obtain the essential oil
Filtration: the extracted oil is filtered to remove any remaining solid residues and impurities
Concentration (optional): in some processes, the oil may be concentrated to enhance the potency of the active ingredients
Packaging: the final product is packaged under controlled conditions to ensure stability and purity.

Applications

Medicine: Jasminum Officinale Oil is known for its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antidepressant properties. It is used in traditional medicine to treat various conditions such as skin infections, stress, and anxiety

Cosmetics: in the cosmetics industry, Jasminum Officinale Oil is valued for its soothing, moisturizing, and anti-aging properties. It is commonly included in formulations of facial creams, serums, lotions, and perfumes

Aromatherapy: Jasminum Officinale Oil is widely used in aromatherapy for its calming and uplifting effects. It is often diffused or added to massage oils to promote relaxation and emotional well-being

Personal Care: beyond medical and cosmetic applications, Jasminum Officinale Oil can also be used in personal care products such as shampoos, conditioners, and body oils for its nourishing and aromatic properties

Environmental and Safety Considerations

Environmental Impact: the production of Jasminum Officinale Oil generally has a low environmental impact, especially when sustainable harvesting practices are employed. The use of natural solvents and steam distillation minimizes the release of harmful chemicals into the environment

Safety: Jasminum Officinale Oil is considered safe for topical use in the concentrations typically employed in consumer products. However, it is essential to ensure that the oil is free from contaminants and pathogens. Allergic reactions are rare but cannot be excluded.

Cosmetic Safety

INCI

Fragrance. It plays a very important role in the formulation of cosmetic products as it provides the possibility of enhancing, masking or adding fragrance to the final product, increasing its marketability. It is able to create a perceptible pleasant odour, masking a bad smell. The consumer always expects to find a pleasant or distinctive scent in a cosmetic product.

Moisturizing. This ingredient is responsible for preventing the evaporation of moisture from the skin and improving cellular activity. When exposed to cold or hot air currents, the skin absorbs water from its inner layer to compensate for the evaporated water. If the draught phenomenon persists, the stratum corneum is dry and, if at all, damaged.

Skin conditioning agent. It is the mainstay of topical skin treatment as it has the function of restoring, increasing or improving skin tolerance to external factors, including melanocyte tolerance. The most important function of the conditioning agent is to prevent skin dehydration, but the subject is rather complex and involves emollients and humectants that can be added in the formulation.

Soothing. Ingredient with the task of restoring moisture to the skin, helping in the healing process of irritation, inflammation and skin disorders.

Perfuming. Unlike fragrance, which can also contain slightly less pleasant or characteristic odours, the term perfume indicates only very pleasant fragrances. Used for perfumes and aromatic raw materials.
