Montmorillonite is a type of smectite clay mineral with a layered structure composed of:

Aluminum Silicate Sheets: Central to its structure, providing the clay's characteristic properties.

Physical Properties
Montmorillonite typically appears as a fine, soft powder that is off-white to pale green in color. It has a high surface area and a unique ability to swell in water, forming a gel-like substance that can absorb impurities and toxins.

Cosmetic and Personal Care Applications

Absorbent: Effectively absorbs excess oils and impurities from the skin, making it ideal for use in masks and cleansers.

Detoxifying: Helps to draw out toxins and pollutants from the skin, promoting a clearer complexion.

Cosmetics - INCI Functions


Abrasive agent. It contains abrasive particles to remove stains or biofilm that accumulate on the stratum corneum or teeth. Baking soda, kieselguhr, silica and many others have abrasive properties. Peeling or exfoliating products used in dermatology or cosmetic applications contain abrasive agents in the form of synthetic microspheres, however, these microspheres, or abrasive particles may not be biodegradable and create pollution in aquatic ecosystems.

Absorbent. Absorbs substances dispersed or dissolved in aqueous solutions, water/oil, oil/water.

Bulking agent. It regulates the water content, dilutes other solids, can increase the volume of a product for better flow, acts as a buffer against organic acids, helps to keep the pH of the mixture within a certain level.

Emulsion stabiliser. Emulsions are thermodynamically unstable. Emulsion stabilisers improve the formation and stability of single and double emulsions. as well as their shelf-life. It should be noted that in the structure-function relationship, the molar mass of the ingredient used plays an important role.

Surfactant - Foam booster. It has the effect of introducing gas bubbles into the water and affects the cleaning process by helping to spread the cleanser. Since sebum has an inhibiting effect on the bubble, more foam is produced in the second shampoo.
