Once approved, they are assigned an E number (such as E102 for tartrazine) to facilitate their identification on product ingredient labels. Despite their approval, the presence of artificial colors in food products remains a controversial topic, especially because of the potential link with health issues such as allergies, hyperactivity in children, and, in some cases, carcinogenic risks.
In recent years, there has been growing pressure from consumers and some public interest groups to reduce or eliminate the use of artificial colors in favor of natural alternatives. This movement has been driven by increased awareness of possible health implications and a general trend towards consuming products perceived as more "natural" and "healthy."
In response, many companies in the food industry and other sectors have begun to replace artificial colors with natural ones, even though this can present challenges in terms of color stability, taste, and costs. For example, beta-carotene (extracted from vegetables) can be used as a natural alternative to synthetic yellow, while anthocyanin (extracted from fruits like berries) can replace some artificial red dyes.
USA
In the United States, the regulation and use of artificial colors are overseen by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA evaluates and approves artificial colors for safety before they can be used in food, drugs, cosmetics, and certain medical devices. Once approved, these colors are given a specific designation, such as "FD&C" (Food, Drug, and Cosmetic) followed by the name of the color and a number, indicating they are safe for use in foods, drugs, and cosmetics. Examples include FD&C Red No. 40 and FD&C Blue No. 1.
The approval process for artificial colors in the U.S. involves rigorous scientific review to ensure that they do not pose significant risks to human health at their intended levels of consumption. Despite this, the use of artificial colors has been contentious, with ongoing debates about their safety and impact on health, particularly concerning hyperactivity in children and potential carcinogenic effects. This has led to calls for more natural ingredients in foods and stricter labeling requirements.
In response to consumer demand for more natural products and concerns over artificial colors, many food manufacturers in the U.S. have begun reformulating their products to eliminate artificial colors, replacing them with colors derived from natural sources. For example, many companies have started using turmeric to achieve yellow hues, beet juice for red, and spirulina for blue.
Moreover, while the FDA requires that all artificial colors be listed on the ingredient label of food products, there has been increasing pressure to also include warning labels about potential health effects, similar to regulations in the European Union.
