Acrylamide/Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate Copolymer is a chemical compound, a copolymer.

The name describes the structure of the molecule

  • "Acrylamide" is an organic monomer used in the production of various polymers. It is known to form stable polymer networks.
  • "Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate" is another monomer that, when polymerized, imparts specific properties to the resulting polymer, such as the ability to form stable gels.
  • "Copolymer" indicates that the product is a polymer formed from two different monomers, in this case, acrylamide and sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate.

Description of raw materials used in production

  • Acrylamide - A water-soluble organic monomer.
  • Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate - Another organic monomer which provides negative charges to the polymer.

Step-by-step summary of industrial chemical synthesis process

  • Preparation - Starting ingredients, acrylamide, and sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate are prepared under controlled conditions.
  • Polymerization - In the presence of initiators and catalysts, the monomers react to form a copolymer.
  • Purification - The resultant polymeric product is purified through various methods like filtration or precipitation to remove any unreacted monomers or impurities.
  • Drying - The polymer is subsequently dried to remove any residual water.

It appears in the form of a white powder.

What it is for and where

Cosmetics

It is a restricted ingredient as  III/66 a Relevant Item in the Annexes of the European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. Substance or ingredient reported: Polyacrylamides

Emulsion stabiliser. Emulsions are thermodynamically unstable. Emulsion stabilisers improve the formation and stability of single and double emulsions. as well as their shelf-life. It should be noted that in the structure-function relationship, the molar mass of the ingredient used plays an important role.

Viscosity control agent. It controls and adapts, Increasing or decreasing, viscosity to the required level for optimal chemical and physical stability of the product and dosage in gels, suspensions, emulsions, solutions.

Commercial Applications

Cosmetics and Skincare. Acts as a thickening and stabilizing agent in creams, lotions, and other skincare products.

Hair Care Products. Used in shampoos, conditioners, and hair treatments to improve the texture and feel of the products.

Makeup. Found in products such as foundations and primers to enhance product spread and staying power on the skin.

Sun Care Products. Can be used in sun lotions to enhance consistency and application.
