Dahlia variabilis flower water is a fragrant liquid obtained from the steam distillation of Dahlia variabilis (family Asteraceae) flowers.

The name describes the structure of the ingredient

  • "Dahlia variabilis" refers to the botanical species of dahlia.
  • "Flower water" signifies that the water is derived from the flowers of this plant, specifically from the distillation process of the flowers.

Description of raw materials used in production

The flowers of Dahlia variabilis are the primary raw material. These flowers are harvested and utilized in the steam distillation process to yield the flower water.

Extraction process

  • Flower collection - The flowers of Dahlia variabilis are harvested from the plant.
  • Steam distillation - Fresh or partially dried flowers are subjected to steam distillation. During this process, steam extracts volatile components from the petals.
  • Condensation - The steam carrying the volatile components is cooled and condensed to form a liquid.
  • Separation - Any essential oil, if present, is separated from the water.
  • Packaging - The flower water is packaged in suitable containers and sealed for sale or for use in various products.

What it is for and where

Cosmetics

Skin conditioning agent - Emollient. Emollients have the characteristic of enhancing the skin barrier through a source of exogenous lipids that adhere to the skin, improving barrier properties by filling gaps in intercorneocyte clusters to improve hydration while protecting against inflammation. In practice, they have the ability to create a barrier that prevents transepidermal water loss.  Emollients are described as degreasing or refreshing additives that improve the lipid content of the upper layers of the skin by preventing degreasing and drying of the skin. The problem with emollients is that many have a strong lipophilic character and are identified as occlusive ingredients; they are oily and fatty materials that remain on the skin surface and reduce transepidermal water loss. In cosmetics, emollients and moisturisers are often considered synonymous with humectants and occlusives.

Skin conditioning agent. It is the mainstay of topical skin treatment as it has the function of restoring, increasing or improving skin tolerance to external factors, including melanocyte tolerance. The most important function of the conditioning agent is to prevent skin dehydration, but the subject is rather complex and involves emollients and humectants that can be added in the formulation.

Applications

Cosmetics and Skin Care

  • Moisturizing: Floral waters often help in hydrating the skin, and Dahlia flower water may offer moisturizing properties.
  • Soothing: It could provide soothing effects on irritated skin, although this would require further research for validation.
  • Antioxidant: Plants often contain antioxidant compounds. Dahlia flower extracts may impart antioxidant benefits, helping the skin combat free radicals.
  • Fragrance: Might be used in formulations to give a delicate floral scent to products.

Aromatherapy

  • Relaxation: Floral waters are often used in aromatherapy for their calming effects, and Dahlia flower water may be utilized for similar purposes, although its specific properties in aromatherapy are not widely documented.
