Dimethiconol/stearyl methicone/phenyl trimethicone copolymer is a chemical compound, copolymer lis a chemical compound, copolymer. Copolymers are characterised by a minimum of 2 monomers polymerised with each other.

Polymer formed from poly[oxy(methylstearyl)silylene, .alpha.-trimethylsilyloxy, .omega.-trimethylsilyl, poly[oxy(phenyl-trimethylsilyloxy)silylene,.alpha.-trimethylsilyloxy,.omega.-trimethylsilyl, and poly[oxy(dimethylsilylene),.alpha.-hydro,.omega.-hydro

Dimethiconol is a synthetic polymer, a kind of silicone rubber similar to dimethicone, and is considered safe from a safety viewpoint by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

The name defines the structure of the molecule

  • "Dimethiconol" is a form of silicone terminated with hydroxyl groups (-OH). It is used in hair and skin care products for its conditioning and film-forming properties.
  • "Stearyl Methicone"  is a silicone modified with a stearyl side chain (C18H37), which is a long-chain alkyl group. It is used as an emollient and conditioning agent.
  • "Phenyl Trimethicone" is a silicone modified with a phenyl group, which gives it higher refractive properties. It is used to increase the shine and softness of hair and skin.
  • "Copolymer" indicates a polymer that is formed from two or more different types of monomers.

Description of raw materials used in production

  • Dimethiconol - A silicone polymer terminated with hydroxyl groups.
  • Stearyl Methicone - A silicone polymer modified with stearyl groups.
  • Phenyl Trimethicone - A silicone polymer modified with phenyl groups.
  • Catalyst - For example, a platinum catalyst, used to facilitate the copolymerization.

Step-by-step summary of industrial chemical synthesis process.

  • Preparation - The starting polymers are purified and prepared for the reaction.
  • Mixing - Dimethiconol, Stearyl Methicone, and Phenyl Trimethicone are mixed in desired ratios.
  • Copolymerization - The monomers are reacted together in the presence of a catalyst to form the copolymer.
  • Purification - The copolymer is separated from any impurities and unreacted products.
  • Drying - Moisture is removed from the copolymer.
  • Packaging - The copolymer is packaged in suitable containers for transport and sale.
  • Quality Control - The final product undergoes various quality checks to ensure it meets specifications.

What it is used for and where it is used

Cosmetics

Suspending agent. Non surfactant. Cosmetic or pharmaceutical suspensions are known to be thermodynamically unstable and it is therefore essential to include in the formulation a suspending agent capable of dispersing any sedimented particulates and reducing the rate of sedimentation. The presence of this agent increases the consistency of the suspension medium and exerts a protective colloidal action.

Light stabilizer. It prevents light from degrading light-sensitive components and slows down degradation reactions that have already begun. The mechanism is, in a way, similar to antioxidants and the effectiveness depends on the.complexity of the formulation and the density of the product.

Skin conditioning agent. It is the mainstay of topical skin treatment as it has the function of restoring, increasing or improving skin tolerance to external factors, including melanocyte tolerance. The most important function of the conditioning agent is to prevent skin dehydration, but the subject is rather complex and involves emollients and humectants that can be added in the formulation.
