Sodium tocopheryl phosphate is a chemical compound, lipophilic molecule and amphiphilic lipid, which includes vitamin E, but is structurally different, synthesised by photosynthetic organisms via enzymes. It is generally produced from vegetable oils by Soxhlet extraction using hexane, but also by different multi-step processes. This ingredient is the sodium salt of a mixture of tocopheryl phosphate.
What it is used for and where
Cosmetics
Antioxidant agent. Ingredient that counteracts oxidative stress and prevents cell damage. Free radicals, pathological inflammatory processes, reactive nitrogen species and reactive oxygen species are responsible for the ageing process and many diseases caused by oxidation.
Emulsion stabilizer. Emulsions are thermodynamically unstable. Emulsion stabilisers improve the formation and stability of single and double emulsions. It should be noted that in the structure-function relationship, molar mass plays an important role.
Reducing agent. Ingredient that facilitates permanent hair waving by adjusting the pH to an optimal level.
Surfactant - Emulsifying agent. Emulsions are thermodynamically unstable. Emulsifiers have the property to reduce the oil/water or water/oil interfacial tension, improve emulsion stability and also directly influence the stability, sensory properties and surface tension of sunscreens by modulating their filmometric performance.
Viscosity Enhancing Agent - non acqueous. Since viscosity is important for increasing the chemical and physical stability of the product, Viscosity Enhancing Agent non acqueous is an important dosage factor in gels, suspensions, emulsions, solutions. Increasing viscosity makes formulations less sedimentary and more homogeneously thickened.
