The name defines the structure of the molecule:
- Poly means "many" and is used in chemistry to indicate a polymer, a large molecule composed of many repetitive subunits.
- Silicone refers to a class of synthetic materials, polymers with a backbone composed of silicon and oxygen atoms. Silicones are known for their flexibility and heat resistance.
- -30. This number is a label used by the manufacturer to differentiate this specific type of silicone from others. It does not provide specific information about the chemical structure of the compound.
The synthesis process takes place in several stages:
- Preparation. The first stage of the synthesis of Polysilicone-30 is the preparation of monomers, the backbone of the polymer. This involves the purification of siloxane or silane monomers.
- Polymerization. Purified monomers are polymerized, or bound together, to form the silicone polymer by a process known as ring-opening polymerization, which involves breaking the ring structure of the monomers and connecting them in a chain. The process is usually performed in the presence of a catalyst and at elevated temperatures.
- Termination. The polymerization process is then terminated to stop the growth of the polymer chains by adding a compound that reacts with the active sites on the polymer chain, preventing further growth.
- Purification. The resulting polymer is purified to remove any unreacted monomers and other impurities with processes such as filtration, washing and drying.
- Quality control. The final product is then tested to ensure it meets the required specifications. This may involve testing for parameters such as molecular weight, viscosity, and purity.
Silicones have high chemical stability but low biodegradability and high bioaccumulation potential.

Cosmetics
Hair conditioning agent. A large number of ingredients with specific purposes can co-exist in a hair shampoo: cleansers, conditioners, thickeners, mattifying agents, sequestering agents, fragrances, preservatives, special additives. However, the indispensable ingredients are the cleansers and conditioners as they are necessary and sufficient for hair cleansing and manageability. The others act as commercial and non-essential auxiliaries such as: appearance, fragrance, colouring, etc. Hair conditioning agents have the task of increasing shine, manageability and volume, and reducing static electricity, especially after treatments such as colouring, ironing, waving, drying and brushing. They are, in practice, dispersing agents that may contain cationic surfactants, thickeners, emollients, polymers. The typology of hair conditioners includes: intensive conditioners, instant conditioners, thickening conditioners, drying conditioners.
Skin conditioning agent. An ingredient that is the mainstay of topical skin treatment by restoring, increasing or improving skin tolerance to external factors, including melanocyte tolerance. The most important function of the conditioning agent is to prevent skin dehydration, but the subject is rather complex and involves emollients and humectants.
Safety
It is an ingredient that has a high bioaccumulation and persistence, however in cosmetic use this ingredient is considered safe.
