Polyquaternium-11 is a chemical compound, copolymer, 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl ester, polymer with 1-ethenyl-2-pyrrolidinone, compd. with diethyl sulphate.
The name describes the structure of the molecule:
- The name "Polyquaternium" is derived from a combination of the words "polymer" and "quaternary", referring to the presence of quaternary ammonium groups in the polymer's structure.
- "-11" is a designative number indicating a specific variant or chemical structure within the polyquaternium family. The number is a chronological reference of the registration date of this ingredient.
Description of raw materials used in production:
Vinylpyrrolidone and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer - This is the base monomer for the production of Polyquaternium-11. Vinylpyrrolidone provides film-forming properties, while dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate introduces quaternary ammonium groups into the polymer.
The industrial synthesis process takes place in different steps:
- Polymerization - Vinylpyrrolidone and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate are polymerized together, forming a copolymer.
- Quaternization - Once the copolymer is formed, the amino groups are quaternized, typically using an agent like methyl chloride, to form the polymer with quaternary ammonium groups.
It appears as a colourless to light yellow liquid, soluble in water, insoluble in esters, hydrocarbons and ketone. It also appears in the form of a white powder.

What it is used for and where
Cosmetics
Antistatic agent. Static electricity build-up has a direct influence on products and causes electrostatic adsorption. The antistatic ingredient reduces static build-up and surface resistivity on the surface of the skin and hair.
Film-forming agent. It produces a continuous ultra-thin film with an optimal balance of cohesion, adhesion and stickiness on the skin or hair to counteract or limit damage from external phenomena such as chemicals, UV rays and pollution.
