Dimethiconol is a chemical compound, a silicone polymer.
It occurs as a transparent oily liquid, insoluble in water.

What it is used for and where
Medical
Used in combination with castor oil to treat pediculosis in hair lice infections and the efficacy of this safe physical treatment was similar to that of the chemical pediculicides malathion, permethrin (1).
Cosmetics
Both Dimethiconol and parts of its esters are used in cosmetics as hair conditioning agents and skin conditioners, moisturisers.
- Skin. Increases spreadability and consistency of cream or oil, improves skin elasticity with a gliding effect.
- Hair. Anti-static agent, improves hair shine. Usage: 1-100%.
- Sun protection products. Increases the protection and waterproof characteristics by creating a protective barrier. Usage: 1-15%.
Safety
Dimethiconol is not absorbed through the skin so there is no concern for potential reproductive and developmental toxicity or carcinogenicity (2).
