What is Rosuvastatin 

A lipid-lowering drug, that is, with activity to lower levels of the harmful LDL cholesterol and anti-inflammatory, fully synthetic statin.

Rosuvastatin is a selective inhibitor of HMG‐CoA reductase. The cholesterol‐lowering effect of the drug manifests by blocking 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG‐CoA) reductase, a rate controlling enzyme in the metabolic pathway that produces cholesterol. Of particular note, rosuvastatin has the highest affinity and highest inhibitory effect against HMG‐CoA reductase compared to other statin drugs, effectively reducing LDL (1).

 In well-designed clinical trials evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of rosuvastatin/ezetimibe administered as either separate agents or as an FDC, rosuvastatin/ezetimibe was significantly more effective than rosuvastatin monotherapy (including at double the dose of rosuvastatin) or simvastatin/ezetimibe in reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol in adults with hypercholesterolemia (2).

Regarding the comparison between rosuvastatin and atorvastatin, this study confirmed that the efficacy of rosuvastatin was superior to that of atorvastatin (3) and 10mg rosuvastatin were shown to be more effective than 20 mg atorvastatin in lowering serum lipid levels and elevating the ABI  ( an atherosclerosis rating scale) (4).
