Pinus sylvestris L. (Scots Pine)

Description

Pinus sylvestris (family Pinaceae), commonly known as Scots pine, is an evergreen conifer widely distributed throughout Europe and northern Asia. It is a highly hardy species capable of adapting to cold climates, nutrient-poor soils, and demanding environmental conditions. In southern Europe, including Italy, it occurs mainly in mountainous areas.

It is easily recognized by the characteristic orange-red bark on the upper trunk and by its needles arranged in pairs. The buds, needles, and young twigs contain aromatic substances from which an essential oil is obtained, traditionally valued for its balsamic, expectorant, and aromatic properties.
