Tootsie is a 1982 film directed by Sydney Pollack. The film is a brilliant comedy that follows the story of an unemployed actor who decides to disguise himself as a woman to land a role on a television soap opera.

Plot

The film's protagonist is Michael Dorsey (played by Dustin Hoffman), a highly talented but notoriously difficult-to-work-with theater actor. After being consistently rejected at auditions due to his stubborn behavior, Michael decides to adopt a female alter ego named Dorothy Michaels and seek employment as an actress.

Under the identity of Dorothy, Michael manages to secure a role on a popular television soap opera called "Southwest General." The problem is that Michael must portray Dorothy in public and maintain the disguise, leading him into increasingly complicated situations.

Complications escalate when Michael, as Dorothy, falls in love with his co-star, Julie Nichols (played by Jessica Lange), who is convinced that Dorothy is a woman. Meanwhile, Michael must also navigate the implications of his new gender identity and people's reactions to it.

The comedy revolves around hilarious situations and carries a deeper message about identity, diversity, and the power of empathy.
