L-leucina è un amminoacido che il corpo umano non riesce a produrre, ma che deve essere assimilato tramite assunzione di alimenti quali farine integrali, frutta secca ed altro.

Si è scoperto che produce effetti anabolici sulla sintesi proteica nei muscoli e sulla segnalazione cellulare (1).

Le lacerazioni della cuffia dei rotatori (RCT), la lesione del tendine più comune, sono sempre accompagnate da atrofia muscolare, che è caratterizzata da un'eccessiva degradazione proteica. La leucina potenzialmente attenua l'atrofia muscolare indotta dalla transezione dei tendini (2).
