Evening primrose (Oenothera L.) is a plant belonging to the Onagraceae family and grows in the temperate zones of South and North America. Oenothera L. is a large genus with 145 species.
What it is used for and where
In this study, evening primrose was shown to promote the contraction of matrix collagen, actin polymerisation and the production of essential ECM proteins. These results confirm the therapeutic value of this plant in slowing down the progression of skin ageing (1).

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni is a native plant of South America belonging to the Asteraceae family, with a long and dated history of medicinal plant first used in traditional medicine against diabetes and hypertension.
Its leaves are nowadays commercially utilized by the food and pharmaceutical industry as they produce secondary metabolites (diterpene glycosides), which are about 300 times sweeter than sucrose (1).
Its benefits in medicine range from hypertension to diabetes and this study confirms that a treatment with Stevia in 250mg tablets produced a significant improvement in the biochemical parameters of patients with chronic kidney disease (2).
Results suggest that oral administration to rats of a watery extract of dried leaves of Stevia induces systemic and renal vasodilation, causing hypotension, diuresis and natriuresis (3).
Stevia has many pharmacological and therapeutic applications, as suggested by many preclinical studies and some clinical trials; the properties of Stevia are non-toxic and have antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal and anticarcinogenic activities (4).

Arnica montana L. is a plant belonging to the Asteraceae family and is a source of interesting and very useful components for human health: flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolic acids and essential oils.
It exerts antioxidant (1), antibacterial (2), anti-inflammatory (3), antifungal (4) activities.
This study draws attention to the use of Arnica montana as an alternative to chemicals.:"Chemical and plant-derived anti-bacterials to treat gingivitis and periodontitis at the initial stage should be used in combination amid their different mechanisms of action. Plant-derived actives for oral care could substitute toxic chemicals due to multiple modes of positive effects" (5).

The best known Gentian is the Greater Gentian (Gentiana lutea L.), one of 400 species of the Gentianaceae family that grow in the temperate mountain regions of Asia, Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand. It is a perennial plant that, during the summer, develops a stalk up to 80 cm high with a basal rose of between 4 and 8 oblong leaves. The flowers grow in two opposing groups at different levels above two elliptical leaves with a flower on top of the stem.
The colour of Gentiana lutea varies from yellow to orange and its taste is bitter.
What it is used for and where
Medically, microencapsulated bitter compounds from Gentiana lutea have been shown to reduce daily energy intake in humans (1) and this may be useful for those suffering from obesity and related diseases (2).
The main substances contained include carotenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanins (3), antioxidants and anti-inflammatories potentially useful in the management of vascular diseases (4).

Abstract: In the present study, replicative lifespan and chronological lifespan assays of yeast were used to double-screen antiaging compounds from Gentiana rigescens Franch, a Chinese herb medicine. Inokosterone from G. rigescens Franch extended not only the replicative lifespan of K6001 yeast but also the chronological lifespan of YOM36 yeast. Furthermore, it can enhance the survival ability of mammalian cells. In order to understand the mechanism of action of this compound, this study focused on antioxidative stress and autophagy when performing the analysis.

Abstract. Anthocyanins are important pigments for flower color, determining the ornamental and economic values of horticultural plants. As a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of anthocyanidins, dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR) catalyzes the reduction of dihydroflavonols to generate the precursors for anthocyanidins (i.e., leucoanthocyanidins) and anthocyanins. To investigate the functions of DFRs in plants, we cloned the GlaDFR1 and GlaDFR2 genes from the petals of Gentiana lutea var. aurantiaca and transformed both genes into Nicotiana tabacum by Agrobacterium-mediated leaf disc method.

Abstract. Gentiana lutea is a bitter herb that is traditionally used to improve gastric disorders. Recently, we have shown that Gentiana lutea extract (GE) also modulates the lipid metabolism of human keratinocytes in vitro and in vivo. In the present study, we investigated the role of GE on ceramide synthesis in human primary keratinocytes (HPKs) and psoriasis-like keratinocytes.

Lavender belongs to the Laminaceae family and is a small plant that produces a flowering stem with a classic colour and intense fragrance.
It reaches a height of 90 cm.
Lavender species :
Then there is a whole plethora of hybrids, the Lavandini, used in cultivation for their higher yield and essential oils.
This study considers that, in the light of literature reports as a medical plant effective in the treatment of inflammation, depression and stress, due to its sedative and anxiolytic action, thrombotic and antimicrobial properties, the results demonstrate DNA-protective activity (1).
Lavender's anti-inflammatory activity is due to its high polyphenol content (2).
